Regional Health IT Extension Centers

In an editorial I wrote this week for Health Affairs (to be published in the March IT issue), I emphasized the need for Regional Health IT Extension Centers - local support organizations that help doctors install electronic health records and use them to achieve improved quality, efficiency, and continuity of care.

Farzad Mostashari, MD, MSc (Assistant Commissioner, Primary Care Information Project New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene) and Micky Tripathi (President and CEO Massachusetts eHealth Collaborative) took the lead in writing a white paper about this important concept.

This very important briefing describes the approach that I believe will ensure the successful rollout of EHRs in the US.

I encourage you to read it!

I agree with the approach in the briefing and want to reinforce the importance of outreach to physician and other providers by the regional extension centers.

Sending an email to the docs on the date and time of training just won't be enough. The regional extension centers will need to be very effective at communicating the value proposition in a very personal way to the providers.

I am a representative of Clinlab Information Solutions who develop lab information systems and provide services that are interoperable with other systems. We are interested in learning more about what we can do to contribute to providing a quality service. What can we do to coincide with these IT extension centers?

We are an IT Support group for medical practices. We have already been doing what is going to be needed. We would most definately be interested in participating in the Regional Health IT Extension. Our website is www.mpacts.net. If anyone wants to partner with us, please contact me via our website.

Interesting paper. I will circulate it (and this link) among my colleagues). I am with HealthInsight, just rehired to work within our REC contract covering Nevada and Utah.

I'd like to see some current thoughts (the paper and these comments are more than a year old).
